Yes
Medicinal cannabis works thanks to the union of phytocannabinoids (molecules produced by the cannabis plant) with receptors in the human endocannabinoid system. Joining the molecule to the receptor generates physiological responses in the body’s systems, which leads to anticonvulsion and anti-inflammatory effects, as well as pain modulation and effects on appetite, memory and immune system responses.
Cannabidiol (CBD) is a phytocannabinoid. It’s a molecule produced exclusively by the Cannabis sp. species of plant, which produces no psychoactive effect.
No known side effects to using CBD have been noted to date. The side effects a patient may experience when using inadequate doses of THC are dizziness, dry mouth, increased heart rate, anxiety in patients that have a history of psychotic disorders, and mental and physical sedation. Medical cannabis is administered according to each individual patient’s dosage, which is why it is always supplied according to a medical prescription. Patients are evaluated previously to determine whether treatment with medicinal cannabis is suitable.
Medcolcanna is working with the University of Groningen to clinically trial 12 specific formulations for 12 medical conditions that have been scientifically validated as being treatable with cannabis. It’s important to bear in mind that not all illnesses can be treated with cannabis but there is scientific evidence that several can, including epilepsy, chronic pain, the nausea and vomiting caused by chemotherapy, and complaints related to the central nervous system.
No, CBD has no dependency issues and does not generate addiction.
The medicinal effects of tetrahydrocannabidiol (THC) include the fact it is analgesic, antispasmodic and antioxidant, as well as the fact it reduces nausea, increases appetite and acts as a muscle relaxant.
Both cannabidiol (CBD) and tetrahydrocannabidiol (THC) are phytocannabinoids produced exclusively by the Cannabis sp. Both have the same chemical formula, C21H30O2, are synthesized from the same biochemical precursor, are soluble in organic solvents, lipids and alcohols and insoluble in water.
Physiologically, the main difference between these two molecules lies in their ability to bind to the receptors in the human endocannabinoid system. THC binds closely to the endocannabinoid system’s receptors, whereas CBD does not. This means that THC produces changes in physiological processes, such as increased heart rate, reduced blood pressure and a psychoactive effect. CBD does not produce physiological alterations. It does not affect the heart rate, blood pressure or body temperature, so is considered non-psychoactive. CBD also has a modulating effect on the effects of THC. In terms of regulations, the main difference is that CBD is not a controlled substance, whereas THC is worldwide.
